Located in Western Uganda, Kiruhura, Isingiro, and Mbarara district, Lake Mburo National Park is remarkably a compact gem! It spreads to cover only 260sq.km of land making it one of the smallest Uganda safari parks. It is also the most accessible park taking tourists only 4 hours to drive from Kampala.

Lake Mburo National Park has existed as a national park since 1983 and later, it was designated as a UNESCO heritage site in 1993. It lies at an elevation between 1220 and 1828m, sheltering largely savanna grassland, forests, swamps, lakes which constitute its diverse habitats. It takes its name from the scenic Lake Mburo and protects a diversity of wildlife, birds, and a lot more.

Wildlife

Lake Mburo National Park is beefed with over 68 mammal species. These include among other diverse antelope families such as duikers, impalas, bushbucks, elands, topis, oribis, sitatungas, reedbucks, roan antelopes. Other incredible species include the Rothschild giraffes, Burchell’s zebras, bush pigs, lion, leopard, buffaloes, jackals, hyenas, hippos, crocodiles.

Birds

Lake Mburo National Park is an outstanding Uganda safari park with about 350 bird species. It has a long bird-list ranging from rufous napped, yellow-throated longclaw, pelicans, shoebill stork, yellow papyrus, bare-faced go-away bird, common scimitar bill, finfoot, white-winged tit, white-headed barbet, Nubian woodpecker, Ross’s turacos, grey crowned crane, coqui francolin, rufous bellied heron, yellow-breasted apalis, long-tailed cisticola. There are also brown chested lapwing, black-bellied bustard, emerald spotted wood dove.
