Mount Elgon National Park is one of the splendid parks in Uganda and considerably the least visited compared to others. A visit to this park on Uganda safaris guarantees you authentic African wilderness experiences. Mt Elgon National Park is found in Eastern Uganda and a portion of it is shared by Kenya. From Kampala, this protected area is accessible about 5 hours’ drive.

Mt Elgon National Park has existed as one of Uganda safari parks since 1992 when it became a national park. Today, this park sits in an area of 1121sq.kms and takes its name from Mt. Elgon, one of the extinct volcanoes in Uganda. This volcano had its last eruption about 24 million years ago and rises about 4321m with Wagagai being its highest peak. Wagagai peak is ranked 8th highest peak in Africa and Mt. Elgon covers about 4000sq.kms.

Majority of the tourists on Uganda safari to Mt. Elgon National Park come primarily to engage in a thrilling hike to Wagagai Peak of Mount Elgon. Hikers explore different trails with the shortest being the Sasa Trail. This trail is however considerably the one of the toughest paths but it leads climbers to magnificent peaks. On a hike through Sasa trail, you will navigate through Bamasaba farming settlements and stand a chance to explore the unique cultures in the area. The Sasa trail may require you 4 days to make a complete hike and hikes start at Budadiri.

Other trails include Sipi trail taking hikers 4 to 6 days, approximately 56kms starting at altitude of 2050m at Kapkwai Forest Exploration Centre. There is also Piswa trail, 49kms ushering hikers through the Kapkwata village on the Northern side of Mt. Elgon.


Mt. Elgon National Park is one of the interesting and important birding areas in Uganda worth visiting for birding tours. The park is blessed with diversity of birdlife and most importantly, the golden winged sunbirds, Tacazze sunbird, African blue flycatchers, bronze naped pigeons, Jackson’s Francolins, black and white casqued hornbills.


Abseiling is one thrilling experience Mt. Elgon National Park has to offer the world. It is carried out on the cliffs at Sipi Falls. It involves you dropping about 100m while enjoying jaw-dropping views of the ridge near the pool and then you ascend to the top.

Hiking to the Sipi Falls

Best time to visit Mt. Elgon National Park

Mt. Elgon National Park welcomes tourists on Uganda safari all year-round. It experiences favorable weather and climatic conditions but the most ideal time to go on a safari is during the dry season. This is from June to September and December to February. It is the peak season and the ideal period to go volcano hiking.

Safaris to Mt. Elgon National Park are also possible during the rainy or wet or low season though heavy rains are recorded during this period. The rainy months of the year in Mt. Elgon National Park occur from March to May and October to November.
