Rwenzori Mountains National Park is located in Western Uganda, 400kms from Kampala. It is shared by about 3 districts; Kasese, Kabarole and Bundibugyo. It was gazetted in 1991 and it is also a designated UNESCO Heritage Site since 1994. This magnificent park takes its name from the famous Mountains of the Moon/Rwenzori Mountains ranges.

Mt. Rwenzori is remarkably the only block mountain range that is snowcapped in Uganda and it features as the third tallest mountain in Africa. Tourists come to explore Rwenzori Mountains National Park especially on challenging mountaineering adventures to Margherita Peak (5110m). At the summits of Mt Rwenzori, there are incredible features like glaciers, waterfalls, lakes.

Other peaks worth exploring on mountaineering adventure here include Mt. Emin Pasha, Mt. Gessi, Mt. Baker, Mt. Stanley, Mt. Luigi Da Savoia. The Rwenzori Mountains National Park sprawls in an area of 1000sq.kms and its altitude ranges from 1700m to 5109m.


Rwenzori Mountains National Park has an estimated 70 species of mammals. The park features wildlife like bush bucks, elephants, chimpanzees. There are also several Angola colobus monkeys, duikers, leopard, giant forest hogs. Other species of primates include blue monkeys, Rwenzori otters, black and white colobus monkeys.


Rwenzori Mountains National Park is one most sought-after bird watching destination by most birders on Uganda safari. The park rich in bird-life accounting for a total of about 217 bird species. These include 19 Albertine endemic species and on birding trip, expect to identify birds such as western green tinker bird, white starred robin, Shelley’s crimson wing, cinnamon chested bee-eaters.

This UNESCO site is also blessed with the Rwenzori Turacos, Montane masked apalis, scarlet tufted malachite sunbirds, Lagden’s bush shrike, blue headed sunbird. You can as well enjoy good sight of strange weavers, bamboo warblers, olive woodpeckers, collared apalis, barred long tailed cuckoos, red throated alethe, slender billed starling, Kivu ground thrush, strip breast tit. The park also shelters birds like montane sooty boubou, red thighed sparrow hawk, greenbuls.

Some of the birds that dwell in this protected area include Strange weavers, Rwenzori Turacos, long eared owl, Handsome Francolin, archer’s robin chat, greenbuls, barbets, Lagden’s bush shrike, Rwenzori batis, crimson wings, barred long tailed cuckoos, blue headed sunbird to mention but a few.

Nature walks

A visit to Rwenzori Mountains National Park also offers you a great opportunity to embark on day hikes. This takes you via the lush forest at the base of the Rwenzori Mountains ranges. On day hikes, expect to enjoy views of Mubuku River, Baker and the Margherita peaks. You also stand a chance to sight some amazing primates like vervet monkeys, blue monkeys, black and white colobus monkeys.

Best time of the year to go to Rwenzori Mountains National Park

The most favorite time to visit Rwenzori Mountains National Park for mountaineering is during the dry season. This starts from July, August and January, February. During these 2 phases of dry season, the park is generally dry since little or no rains are experienced. Tours are also possible to conduct during the wet months of the year starting from March, April, May, June, September, October and November. But these months experience heavy amount of rainfall.

Getting to Rwenzori Mountains National Park on Uganda trip

Rwenzori Mountains National Park is perched in Western Uganda and it can be reached; by road or by air. By road, tourists have 2 routes to take: The Kampala through Mubende-Fort Portal Tourism City route or the Kampala-Masaka-Mbarara via Kasese route. Or fly from Entebbe International Airport or Kajjansi airfield and land in at Kasese airfield.
